He grew up watching tiatrs presented by commercial directors and the non-commercial experimental tiatr troupes presenting their productions in the tiatr competition. He would always accompany his parents to watch tiatrs even when examinations were nearing. His passion for tiatr grew with each passing day. Whenever he would sit in the audience of Kala Academy watching his all-time favourite duo of comedian brothers Prince Jacob and Supremo Humbert, perform their classy comic acts, his belonging to tiatr deepened as the brothers tickled his funny bone. The cravings and belongings deepened in this young lad as he grew in age.

Migration is an inevitable phenomenon and this young tiatr enthusiast found himself in Dubai, to earn his livelihood. For over two decades and a half, he sat in the audience in Dubai relishing and enjoying the tiatrs staged there. He dreamt big of becoming part of this Tiatr Industry and finally, he decided to lend his hand to take our Goan tiatr in Dubai and enthral the passionate Goans awaiting to watch a tiatr staged. This young tiatr enthusiast, Boney Coelho, finally after working out all modalities and legal aspects for nearly three years staged his first organisational masterpiece, ‘Antonette’, written and directed by Com Sally under the banner of Boneypark Events! The tiatr performance was held on October 8 at Al Nasr Leisureland, Nashwan Hall, Dubai. Being a show held in a closed auditorium, the seats were numbered and limited as a result of which many tiatr lovers who had not booked their tickets in advance, had to return disappointed.

Boney is a proud Goan, and it was natural to see the ‘Goykarponn’ in him oozing out as a perfect host. He wanted the tiatr to be staged in a Goan environment. For parties and events, people are now accorded a warm welcome with a welcome drink: Boney took this concept a step ahead and gave each tiatr viewer a warm welcome with a smile on the lips of the organisers and a gift on the hands of the audience walking in the hall.

The tiatr aficionados had another delight in store. After many years, they feasted on snacks prepared in the traditional Goan Culinary art.

Goans love tiatrs that come from the motherland

Way back in the 70s and 80s, the age-old theatrical art, tiatr, did move overseas and entertained the Goan community spread across the globe. But it was restricted only to the Gulf countries where the Goan diaspora was seen in a large number. During that period, tiatrs were staged in countries like Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and UAE and the response was overwhelming. They were well accepted by the audience as that was the only live entertainment available then. But today, with the Goan community migrating to the UK, seeking greener pastures, tiatrs from Goa are performed in cities like Swindon, Southall, Wembley and Croydon. There is a large population of Goans settled there and organising and staging tiatrs have become much easier, thus helping tiatr lovers to flock to the auditorium and enjoy three-hours of entertainment.Over a period of time, tiatrs from Goa have even moved to the USA, helping the Goan community settled there to find live Goan entertainment.

But entertainment via tiatrs might have not clicked so much there as much as it is doing in the UK. DySP Sammy Tavares, who has stepped on the tiatr stage and released five productions till date, has not only restricted his shows to the tiatr lovers in Goa, but has also moved overseas to cater to the wider Goan community. He was the first director from Goa to take his tiatr to the US, Canada in 2017 and Paris in 2012.
